I love that moment when your child finally understands a concept you have been teaching. Sometimes they get it right away and other times they just need to work through it. Today, if your child is ready, they will be working with a set of farm hands-on short /a/ words worksheets.

These colorful farm hands-on short /a/ words worksheets are perfect for a beginning reader! The short a word families definitely make it easier.

Short /A/ Words Worksheets

I should give you a heads up. This series teaches all the short vowel sounds with the help of word families. Since we are looking at the short /a/ words, all the words will end in one of the following:

  • -ab
  • -ad
  • -ag
  • -am
  • -an
  • -ap
  • -at
  • -ax

Now you may be wondering, “Why word families?” The simple answer is this: they are all rhyming words with a predictable pattern and will help with learning phonics or letter sounds easier.

The Challenging Version

If your child finds the simpler version too simple then this version is perfect. In order to do this activity your child has to:

  • think about what word family it belongs to and find the matching sheet
  • write the word on that mat.

If your child is not at the level to write, and that’s perfectly normal, then simply have them stamp the words with stamps. They can even use letter tiles to help.

Other Ways To Use This Pack

You can also allow your child to match the picture cards with the words. Simply use the spelling tiles, or write the short ‘a’ words on post-its or strips of paper. Have them sound out the word and find the correct picture.
