Fruits and Vegetables Beginning Sounds Sort

I always find it fascinating that whenever I hide our fruits and vegetables Toobs,  my kids seem to want it more. Based on their fascination, I decided to use them to create fruits and vegetables beginning sounds activity for both my J, kindergartner, and C, preschooler.

Our fruits and vegetables beginning sounds activity was a huge hit and we were even able to squeeze in some preschool letter recognition activity as well

FRUITS AND vegetable BEGINNING SOUNDS SKILLS

While brainstorming this activity, I decided that I wanted to work on a few things with my kids. These were:

  1. Working together to solve a problem
  2. Identifying beginning sounds orally
  3. Identifying beginning sounds in print
  4. One to one correspondence
  5. Increase vocabulary

Number one was important as C wants to do everything he sees his sister doing and as a result he knows most if not all of the preschool letter sounds. If I am able to further develop this then it will make homeschooling more than one child a bit easier in the future for me.

HOW TO PLAY

There are a few ways to play this game.

  1. Print your cards on cardstock or regular paper and cut them out.
  2. If you intend to simply work on beginning sounds orally, then gather your Toobs  and say, ” What is this? Its an Apple. Apple starts with? …
  3. Once they have responded, show them the fruit or vegetable card that corresponds with that sound and repeat the sounds.
  4. Once your child is comfortable you can add a little basket for them to go shopping. They can add the fruit or vegetable to their basket whenever they get the sound correct.

Another version (the one we did) is this:

  1. Place your preschooler and your kindergartner side by side on the floor.
  2. Give your kindergartner 2-5 of the fruits and vegetables cards without the image and give your preschooler the one with the image. Eg for the apple cards, the kindergartner will get the card that simply has an A on it while the preschooler will get the card that has both the apple and the letter.
  3. Have them lay the cards out in front of them face up so they can see them.
  4. Pick up a fruit or vegetable and ask your preschooler to identify the object.
  5. Ask your kindergartner to tell you what sound the object begins with. If its a banana, then the beginning sound is ‘b’.
  6. Give your kindergartner the banana to place on his/her page if they get it correctly.
  7. Ask your preschooler to find the card that says ‘b’ or has a banana depending on their level.
  8. Rinse and repeat until all the cards have been used.

POINTS TO NOTE:

If your child is having difficulty with identifying the beginning sounds oral, then use their first name or objects they are familiar with as practice.

What a fun activity for beginning letter sounds. I love that you have modifications for preschoolers and kindergartners.
