Pattern Block Matching Race

I loved creating patterns and finding patterns when I was a little girl. One of my favorite activities was looking at the license plates of vehicles and trying to make a pattern with them. My daughter loves making patterns (not quite as elaborate as I do) but she loves discovering them. My son, on the other hand, loves duplicating the things he sees- the perfect recipe for our pattern matching race.

These pattern block matching race cards are a sure way to help your kids work on matching patterns.Just choose the number of players, cards and a timer.

Teaching patterns to a child can be a little frustrating, but it can be done and be reinforced through games. This game is one of many you could play in addition to your pattern lessons. All you need to do is follow the directions of our pattern matching game below.

  • Pattern block cards (at the end of the post)
  • timer
  1. Print the pattern block cards and cut them into three strips per page.
  2. Give each player as many strips that you think they can handle as well as the pattern blocks they will need.
  3. Have the timer ready.

HOW TO PLAY

  1. Explain to the players that they have to create each pattern they see on the strips with a certain time. Whoever created the most correct patterns within the time wins.
  2.  Set the timer and have all the players match their patterns. A referee may be needed to see if the patterns are complete.

Pattern Race Tips

  • If you do not have a timer on hand, you can simply use the timer on your phone- that’s what we did.
  • If you intend to use these strips more than once, I advise that you laminate them for durability.
