Are virtual back to school activities a thing? We all know that August/ September is creeping up again. When it gets here you need to get your lists together for the start of a new school year except this year is a bit different. Who am I kidding, this year will be VERY different.
Now before you say, why is Alecia talking about virtual back to school activities when she homeschools? Well, my answer is simple. Homeschoolers love to celebrate back to school too and this year our options are limited, dude.
I even had a post a few years back about 4 ways to prepare for back to school. Luckily, there are options so today I am going to share with you a few back to school activities that you can do this year while you wonder when your kids will be back in school. You can even use them beyond that!.
VIRTUAL BACK TO SCHOOL ACTIVITIES TO TRY THIS YEAR
Back to School Ideas 1: Get Started on Your Digital Memory Books
I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do this but I only think of it at the end of the year. So this year we will start off with a bang and document a few things per week. I even plan to create my own digital homeschool planner.
Options I have thought about are CHATBOOKS and SHUTTERFLY. I’m sure there are others but those are the only ones I’ve considered.
Idea 2: Have a Virtual Field Trip
Start the school year off with a bang! Longing to have your kids learn about space, take a virtual field trip to a planetarium! Also plan to have a field trip every month or so that aligns with your kids’ interests. No need to fork out a ton of $$ or even travel, just have your internet and a device and go!
We Are Teachers has a list of over 25 awesome places to visit virtually. Click 25+ Amazing Educational Virtual Field Trips and check them out.

Virtual Back to School Idea 3: Back to School Party
This is where Zoom comes into play. Confession, I had never heard of Zoom until March 2020. Even though I was clearly living under a rock, its AWESOME.
Schedule a party with family members and friends so that they can wish your kiddos a fantastic new year and even play games with them online!
Back to School Idea: Anything Goes Breakfast
One perk of being home with your kids is the fact that you get to enjoy them without busy schedules. What’s their favorite thing to eat? Ask them and make it for them for breakfast!
They may ask for ice cream, pancakes with gummy bears, or even a burger- just make their back to school breakfast special.
Idea 5: Scavenger Hunt Around the House
This one is inspired by my daughter. This summer she insisted on her grandpa hiding 2 used water bottles and had him hide them in different places around the house.
So how do we tweak that for back to school? Hide fun trinkets around the house and whoever finds them gets to keep them. Think of things such as cute erasers, erasable pens. In fact, you can look below at some popular options to try out.
