Today marks the first official post in Wee Skool Wednesdays. For the next 2 weeks, I will be focusing on HORIZONTAL and VERTICAL lines.
Activities
1)Play Dough Worms
This activity is listed on page 12 of Basic Shapes for Beginners.
2) Stack the Blocks
a) Choose the rectangular blocks from the block set. These are the ones that we use but any block set with rectangular pieces will do.
b) Allow your preschooler to play with the block and encourage stacking. Once stacking has started, set a rectangular block down and say:
“This block is a straight line across (horizontal)”
“This block is straight down (vertical)”
c) After saying this a few times, ask them to use their fingers to glide along the block: ACROSS and STRAIGHT DOWN. Return to free play with all the blocks and simply have fun.
3) Walk the Plank
Simply add a few strips of painter’s tape (or any tape for that matter as long as it is coloured) to the floor. Pretend to be a pirate and say, “Arg, walk that plank Matey” Be sure to demonstrate to your preschooler what they are expected to do. Have fun walking the plank!
NOTE: Focus on balance, placing one foot in front of the other
Next Wednesday, we will look at 3 more activities for Horizontal and Vertical Lines. Thanks for walking with me.
