Our zoo animal preschool math activities were inspired by our recent trip to the zoo. My son Caleb loves the zoo despite our last trip was absolutely horrid in his mind. The day started out burning hot as usual and when we got to the zoo, we just had to buy bottles of water and juice. Both Caleb and Jael hated the juice and had to suffice with water and so it was a minus score for TeamMommyandDaddy.
We were able to look at a few of the animals and the kids were even able to pet a goat as well as a blue macaw! Things were starting to look up. Unfortunately, we forgot to look up and not too long after, it rained. No, rain is far too mild of a word- it poured by the buckets full.
Most of us were happy for the cool wet rain Caleb on the other hand screamed. He hated it. You see, Caleb only likes water to be bath temperature and the rain was anything but that. He is still, however, talking about the animals he saw so it couldn’t have been that traumatizing, right?
Zoo Animals Preschool Math
Our activity was a simple one and was pretty easy to put together. The best part was that we were able to practice counting different ways as well as exposure to the sight words for the numbers one to five.

Zoo Animals Number and Numeral Matching
I chose to expose Caleb to the sight words for the numbers one to five. I had no intentions of him knowing it immediately but I figured if I keep exposing him to them, he will eventually remember them. Makes sense, right?
Zoo Animals Counting
Caleb was allowed to match the exact number of zoo animals to the number card chosen. We started by using the cards with the circles that allowed him to work on his one to one correspondence. Eventually, we switched to no cards and tried counting that way.
